Introduction
mdReader is a Markdown reader for Android made by Enlyzr. This policy explains what the app stores, which permissions it asks for and what can leave your device. mdReader has no account and no server of its own, and it includes no analytics, advertising, crash reporting or telemetry. Your documents and reading data stay on your device, except as described below.
Information the app stores
The app keeps the following on your device, in its own private storage:
- reading positions and reading records, including the read-aloud settings of each document;
- highlights and notes, and bookmarks;
- settings and reading profiles, including the names you give to highlight colours;
- the list of recent files, the Knowledge Base and pinned blocks;
- the Library folder you choose, with favourites, tags and file details;
- reading statistics;
- review cards, made from the text of your highlights and question blocks, and their schedule;
- the text of each document as you last reviewed it, so that Compare can show what changed;
- drafts of unsaved edits, which are removed when you save, discard or save a copy.
The app also keeps caches: rendered formulas, rendered diagrams, downloaded remote images and the files you share or export (backup files, the statistics CSV, shared images). They stay until you clear the app's cache or storage.
mdReader reads only the files you open, share to the app or keep in the Library folder. It changes a file only when you tick a task, save your edits or delete the file. Save a copy, exports and Save image create new files.
If you turn on "Carry reading data in the Library folder", each device writes one small file of its own into your Library folder, and takes over what your other devices wrote there. The app itself sends nothing anywhere; whatever already keeps that folder in step on your devices (a sync app, a cloud folder) carries these files with your documents.
Permissions and what leaves your device
- Internet (INTERNET). Used to load remote pictures that a document refers to. They load over HTTPS only, and only while the setting "Load remote images" is on, which it is by default. When it is off, a placeholder loads one image when you tap it, and pictures at plain http addresses never load. Nothing else is fetched: web pages you open as documents are read without loading scripts, style sheets or other content, and diagrams and formulas are drawn on the device without a network. The app contacts whatever hosts the pictures in your documents name; it has no server of its own.
- Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS). Used to show the media notification that controls reading aloud when it keeps going in the background. The app asks for it the first time you use that.
- Foreground service for media playback (FOREGROUND_SERVICE and FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK). Used by the setting "Background listening" (on by default) so that reading aloud can continue with the screen off or while you use other apps, controlled from the notification and the lock screen. With that setting off, speech stops when you leave the reader.
- Reading aloud. The app uses your device's text-to-speech engine. A voice marked "online" in the voice picker sends the text being read to that voice's provider.
- Links. Web, email and phone links open in another app, and only after you confirm.
Third-party services
mdReader uses no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking service. It uses an open-source library to load and show remote pictures. Text-to-speech voices, Look up, Share and the apps that open links are other apps on your device, and they are covered by their own privacy policies.
Children's privacy
mdReader collects no personal information from anyone, including children, and has no account or chat.
Data deletion
Removing a document's reading data, a document from Recent files or a missing file from the Knowledge Base deletes the highlights, bookmarks and records kept for it. Clearing the app's storage in Android's settings, or uninstalling the app, deletes everything the app stores on the device. Files you exported or saved yourself are ordinary files that you can delete like any other. Your own documents are never removed by the app unless you delete them in the Library.
Android backup: with Android backup on, the cloud backup includes your settings and reading profiles (including highlight colour names). Reading positions and records, highlights, notes, bookmarks, recent files, the Knowledge Base, statistics, review cards, Library favourites and tags and the Library folder are excluded. A direct device-to-device transfer copies all of the stored data, but not the cached files, drafts or reviewed texts.
Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and its date. The current version is dated October 2026.
