mdReader

A powerful Markdown reader

Read, annotate and edit Markdown documents on your phone, with comfortable long-form reading in scroll or book mode. It also opens plain text, notebooks, AsciiDoc, Org-mode, web pages and EPUB books, and builds a small personal knowledge base from what you mark.

What is in the app

  • Scroll or book mode

Read by scrolling, or in pages with the time left shown. Your position is saved on every page turn and found again even if the document was edited since.

  • Highlights, notes and bookmarks

Mark text in four colours, add notes, name the colours, and bookmark places. Share highlights grouped by colour or export them as a Markdown summary.

  • Read aloud

Listen with your device's text-to-speech voices, at 0.75x to 2x speed with a sleep timer. Reading can continue with the screen off, from a media notification.

  • Review cards

Highlights and question blocks become spaced-repetition cards. Rate each answer and the card comes back after longer and longer gaps.

  • Edit Markdown in place

Fix a block or rework the whole source in the Raw editor, with a formatting toolbar and find and replace. Nothing is written until you Save, and tasks tick back into the file.

  • Many file types

Markdown, plain text, CSV, Jupyter notebooks, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, Org-mode, Djot, web pages, and EPUB and FictionBook books, all in one reader.

  • Charts, formulas and diagrams

Chart, metric and progress blocks, TeX formulas and Mermaid diagrams are drawn on the device, and a dashboard gathers them from all your documents.

  • Knowledge Base and statistics

Pin key blocks, follow links between documents, and watch a daily reading goal, streaks and a calendar heatmap.

  • Comfort for the eyes

Ten colour themes, eight fonts, nine reading profiles, dimming, a blue-light filter and 20-20-20 reminders. It works with TalkBack.

Questions and answers

Which files does mdReader open?

Markdown, plain text, source files, CSV tables, Jupyter notebooks, AsciiDoc, reStructuredText, Org-mode, Djot, web pages, and EPUB and FictionBook books. It does not open PDF files, Kindle books or copy-protected EPUB books.

Can I edit documents?

Yes, Markdown files can be edited in the app. Other formats are read-only. A file is changed only when you tap Save, tick a task or delete it.

Does it need an account or a server?

No. mdReader has no account and no server of its own, and your documents and reading data stay on your device. The only network use is loading remote pictures that a document refers to, which you can turn off in Settings.

How does it keep my devices in step?

Turn on Carry reading data in the Library folder. Each device writes a small file into your Library folder, and a sync app or cloud folder that already carries the folder carries those files too. The app itself sends nothing.

Why does it ask for notification permission?

Only for the media notification that controls reading aloud when it continues in the background. You can switch Background listening off in Settings.

Which languages does the interface have?

English and Czech, or the language of your phone. A text without a translation is shown in English.

What does it cost?

Nothing. mdReader is free. There is nothing to buy in the app, no subscription and no advertisements.
